"A kitchen provides physical and spiritual nourishment, and for many homes it is the heart and soul of family life," writes celebrated tastemaker Sir Terence Conran in Kitchen Book. Here, we highlight 10 minimalist dream kitchens, from those outfitted with crisp cabinetry to sleek spaces with built-in appliances to those with petite footprints, all designed to make the room as pleasing to the eye as it is to cook in.
Choosing tile for the kitchen backsplash was the biggest struggle of the project, according to Brechbuehler. They settled on light gray horizontal bars by Ann Sacks.

A few big ideas—and some careful workmanship—transform the very small kitchen of a one-bedroom Brooklyn apartment into an expansive space suited to a young professional with a taste for design. The designers at Workstead devised a plan to use an offset grid of cabinets as a unifying element in slate gray that moves across the room and gives it a cool quietude. Minimalist kitchen with lacquered cabinets

The kitchen in Jaime Hayon and Nienke Klunder’s Valencia, Spain, flat is all white, down to the minimalist, lacquered Santos cabinets. When it comes to picking paint and fabric colors, Hayon advocates for grayed-out hues. “My recommendation is that even when you use bolder colors make sure they have a percentage of gray in them,” he says. “If you use yellow, it should be yellow-gray. If a green is used it should be a green-gray.” Photo by: Nienke Klunder

Modern renovated kitchen space.

To impart a high-design feel to the kitchen in a recently renovated Los Feliz house, architect Mike Jacobs wrapped cabinetry from Ikea with a marble countertop and designed built-in bookshelves around the space to help unify the area. The hood is by Zephyr, the cooktop is by Miele, the refrigerator is by Sub-Zero, the ovens are by GE Monogram, and the stand mixer is by KitchenAid. The Sebastian barstools and Trådig fruit bowl are also from Ikea. Photo by: Floto + Warner

Stained black and painted white cabinets and countertop

In paring back the Mill Valley residence he shares with his wife and Dwell founder Lara Deam, architect Chris Deam kept the color palette as simple as possible. Limiting the surfaces to either painted white or stained black allows colorful art, objects, furniture, and people to really pop. Photo by: Dustin Aksland

Modern kitchen with custom cabinetry and Sub-Zero fridge

By designing the custom cabinetry themselves, and journeying outside Houston to have them made, Row on 25th residents Tina and Matthew Ford saved a bundle—money that they invested in appliances such as this highly efficient dishwasher from Asko, a Professional Series range from Bertazzoni, and an Energy Star–rated BI-30U fridge by Sub-Zero.
