It's summer time and the living is easy—as long as you have a place to chill out. Beat the high-summer heat with some of our favorite outdoor spaces.
Modular, Prefab home of the grandson of Frank Llloyd Wright with outdoor deck

When documentary filmmaker Tim Wright built a modular abode by Blu Homes not far from Talesin, the famed studio and school of his grandfather, Frank Lloyd Wright, he didn't overlook the exterior spaces. The Brant Natural Folding Chairs are from Crate and Barrel, and the Strata chairs and wrought-aluminum patio table are by Summer Classics.

Japanese-Inspired Bainbridge Island house rear deck

In Washington State, SHED Architecture & Design renovated a 1970s Gene Zema house, extending the deck to create an opportunity for gatherings. It smoothly transitions the interior level, which hovers above the ground on pylons, back to the earth. Steel columns were specially implemented so the clients could string lights over the deck. A fire-pit is now located in front of these steps.

Modular Texas home has outdoor fireplace on the deck

The fireplace that Lake|Flato designed for the deck at this multigenerational vacation house in Texas's Hill Country is the compound’s focal point. “People can go tuck their small kids into bed and then creep back to the fire pit area and be gregarious late into the night,” says resident Scott Wallace.

modern Los Angeles renovation by Don Dimster with custom furnishings on the roof deck

Architect Don Dimster integrated a new roof deck and custom furnishings into Chris and Marjorie Rice’s 1960s Buff, Straub and Hensman home in Los Angeles. You’re in the hills and looking out over other hills dotted with all different kinds of houses,” Chris says. “The one downside of our property is that there’s not much of a yard, but as we sat on the roof we had this sort of naive idea: It would be really easy to deck the roof and turn it, basically, into a garden.”
