In Washington State, SHED Architecture & Design renovated a 1970s Gene Zema house, extending the deck to create an opportunity for gatherings. A fire-pit is now located in front of these steps.
The residents of this Jackson, Wyoming, getaway devised a creative solution for battling the region's high winds and brutal sunlight by creating a custom chain-mail curtain.
The fireplace that Lake|Flato designed for the deck at this multigenerational vacation house in Texas's Hill Country is the compound’s focal point. “People can go tuck their small kids into bed and then creep back to the fire pit area and be gregarious late into the night,” says resident Scott Wallace.
Architect Don Dimster integrated a new roof deck and custom furnishings into Chris and Marjorie Rice’s 1960s Buff, Straub and Hensman home in Los Angeles. You’re in the hills and looking out over other hills dotted with all different kinds of houses,” Chris says. “The one downside of our property is that there’s not much of a yard, but as we sat on the roof we had this sort of naive idea: It would be really easy to deck the roof and turn it, basically, into a garden.”
