Lisbeth Juul and Laust Nørgaard drew upon their years of experience living on the water to design and build an 860-square-foot floating home in Copenhagen Harbour. The home’s minimal form and furnishings reflect the residents’ desire to downsize following three years on land.
Designer Alejandro Capdevila of Isola System built this approximately 800-square-foot floating house in Wrocław, Poland.
On the edge of a tiny island accessible only by boat, this buoyant summer home lives the life aquatic. The modest cabin has boat,a gabled roof and a cladding of untreated cedar, a material that shows up on docks and homes along Georgian Bay. “Allowing the buildings to weather seems the right thing to do,” architect Hilary Sample says. And it’s ready for winter: Sliding barn doors seal the place up as an impenetrable box.
A C-Frame catamaran currently docked in Prague’s Holesovice neighborhood, Port X is a buoyant dwelling for modular, modern living. Prague’s Atelier SAD collaborated with a company that develops sailing boats to fabricate its curved exterior. While images of the fully wired home on the water make for great photo ops, Port X is at home built for both land and sea.
Living in a houseboat on a tree-lined canal in the middle of Amsterdam may offer many advantages, but a large, live-in kitchen is rarely among them. So when you step into the floating home of Ingmar Visser and Jaro van der Ende, the expansive kitchen comes as a real surprise—more downtown loft than nautical galley. With its beautifully handcrafted elm cabinets, clean, uncluttered lines, and sunny outdoor terrace, it’s more than a space for cooking.
“Being on the water, low and surrounded by it, you feel like you belong to another world,” says architect Eric Cobb, who was hired to design an 1,800-square-foot floating home for a Seattle couple. The pair, a lawyer and an artist, decided to downsize after their children left for college. They wanted a space that would accommodate guests, that had room for kayaks and paddleboards, and that included an outdoor lounging area.
