Modern Sea Ranch home with a modern guesthouse

A new home at Sea Ranch, a half-century-old enclave of rugged modernist houses on the Northern California coast, captures the spirit of its surroundings. Sea caves on the property forced the architects to split some of the living space into a 483-square-foot guesthouse.

Fujimori has an affinity for building structures that appear to be perched precariously: His charred cedar-clad Guest House seems to balance on a sliver of a wall.

A longtime professor at the Institute of Industrial Science at the University of Tokyo, Terunobu Fujimori came to designing late—he got his first commission at age 44, 19 years ago—but he has since conceived some of Japan’s most startlingly original buildings, on average one per year. Fujimori has an affinity for building structures that appear to be perched precariously: his charred cedar-clad guesthouse seems to balance on a sliver of a wall.

zimmerman residence exterior

When the Zimmerman family settled in Seattle in the late 1990s they bought a 1,100-square-foot Craftsman built in the 1920s. Twenty years later, they began craving a bit more space. With the help of Ninebark, a local design-build studio, this granny flat now serves as a playroom, office, and guesthouse for visitors, complete with a kitchenette and full bathroom.

Inner courtyard with pool

Despite Mexico’s strong modernist tradition, Tijuana hasn’t always embraced the style. However, Marco and Angelica Becerril welcomed local architect Jorge Gracia's vision for Casa Becerril, a home for the couple and their extended family. A courtyard faces the guesthouse, which is accessible from custom-made staircase, designed by Gracia himself.
