Three apartments were combined to make one in this sleek Dumbo home.
Dumbo, Brooklyn residence with a red backsplash

Though the home’s common areas are largely white and monotone, the kitchen introduces a pop of red, the owner’s favorite color, through the glossy AGC kitchen backsplash. Stone pietra cardosa counters are used on the center island, along with white Corian around the perimeter. A Miele range, Sub-Zero refrigerator, and Piston stools by Shin and Tomako Azumi complete the space.

75-foot wall of windows in a Brooklyn home

Light is invited into the home through the 75-foot wall of windows in the main living area. Kopel’s favorite part of the home is “the changing quality of light” that “animates the living space” from day to day and season to season. Lucifer architectural lighting and Polk Audio in-wall speakers add understated function.

Brooklyn open-plan living area

To maximize space, several vertical HVAC units were removed and replaced with energy-efficient units that are cleverly concealed in the ceiling. White Ardex concrete flooring is used throughout the common living spaces.

Media room in a Brooklyn apartment

Warm white oak flooring is used in the kids’ media room, a place for casual lounging. It is here that Kopel’s favorite architectural detail can be found: the full-height light slot between the lounge and the entrance vestibule to the apartment.

Kids' room with orange Ikea bunk beds

The kids’ bedroom features playfully colored bunk beds from Ikea. The mirrored closet doors reflect light and make the room appear larger. The vertical light slot can also be viewed through the bedroom corridor.

Blue mosaic tiled bathroom

Bold color is embraced in the home’s first bathroom, with tilework by Trend Mosiacs. Faucets are by Grohe and vanities are by Hastings. A Flos Glo-Ball pendant light illuminates the space.

Reflective glass doors for a walk-in closet

Another of the home’s transitional spaces is the walk-in closet in the master wing. Challenged by the lack of windows in the transitional areas, the closet doors are clad in white glass from Salice America to help bounce light and maximize reflection.

Master bedroom in Brooklyn with ample shelving

In the master bedroom, a small workstation is accented by a Philippe Stark desk chair, and repurposed white shelving offers generous display space. Ten foot ceilings and expansive windows add to the open and airy feel of the room.

Designing for a couple and their two teenage girls, architect Ed Kopel transformed three individual apartments into an expansive, 3,200-square-foot flat. A minimalist white aesthetic is favored throughout the space, which houses the couple's growing art collection. In the U-shaped floorplan, the two residential wings (one for the couple, the other for the kids) are separated by the main living room, a common area thoughtfully redesigned to maximize space and light.
