A holding cell for clutter, a landing pad for laundry. Why is the bedroom so often an afterthought? Nowhere is modernism a more welcome aesthetic antidote than in the bedroom, where a dose of thoughtful design can mean the difference between slapdash and sanctuary. In this slideshow, we showcase a multitude of beautiful bedrooms that accomplish just that.
Maurice “Maurie” McKenzie designed and inhabited this space designed for entertaining turned Borrego Springs weekend retreat. The pair of bedroom suites best reflect McKenzie’s groovy aesthetic: In the master bedroom, the bed is tucked into a recess in the center of the room flanked by two low stairs and fronted by a teak headboard and cabinet.

In the bedroom of Barbara Hill's Marta, Texas home, an improbably placed tub is situated in front of two closets that can easily be maneuvered thanks to skateboard wheels affixed to the underside.

A river breeze flows up and down Fung and Blatt’s canyon street predictably at 4 p.m., cooling the house. In the master bedroom, Blatt and Téa take advantage of the cross-ventilation.

A tastefully spare selection of vintage pieces accents the warm knotty pine in the master bedroom of the Campbell home. The orientation of the room maximizes the picture window that replaced the original garage door. Campbell designed a closet in an alcove behind the wall at the head of the bed.

A lofted sleeping space furnished with a king size Design Within Reach American Modern bed was made possible when the architects raised the ceiling to create a triangular skylight. The move carved out enough headroom to make the second-floor space usable, while still keeping the cottage in compliance with strict local zoning rules for “accessory” buildings.

With the bedroom directly above the kitchen, the architects met the challenge of stacking two rooms, each with a seven-foot ceiling height, in only 12 feet of vertical space by creating two interlocking puzzle pieces.

Tricia Stuth and Ted Shelton created a sense of volume in their Knoxville, Tennessee home by siting bedrooms on split levels and incorporating sliding walls that allow them to expand and contract their living spaces as needed.

Seven steps doubling as storage drawers lead up to the bedroom of Michael Pozner’s not-quite-500-square-foot aerie in Greenwich Village. The bedroom is designed for two people: Both sides of the bed have reading lights and plugs for cell phones and computer chargers.

When Svetlin Krastev and Dessi Nikolova had their second child, they saw two options: Go broke buying a bigger apartment, or renovate their existing 620-square-foot home. The main living space has to function as both a bedroom and a family room, meaning Krastev and Nikolova make do without a couch. When the family watches TV or reads, they cozy up on the bed or sit on the built-in bench, which also serves as a dining and play area.

In the Hagerty House, the bedrooms are arranged in a uniform line of five cubicles. Initially, each bedroom had a vividly colored western wall—red, blue, yellow, or green—with the remaining three walls painted white.
