Modern prefab modular and triangular home by HOMB in Portland living room with custom sofa

In Portland, Oregon, Jeff Kovel of Skylab Architecture designed a house for Kaja and Kristopher Taft using HOMB triangular modules he developed with Method Homes. HOMB also features a super-insulated building skin and a highly efficient mechanical system. Kovel designed the living room’s sofa as well.

El Topo living room with Flos lamp and BB Italia sofa.

Crowned with a glass observatory, this scenic Wisconsin home commands panoramic views of the surrounding grasslands. An Arco floor lamp from Flos arches over a Bend sofa by Patricia Urquiola for B&B Italia. Modern courtyard in Italy.

The acclaimed Italian designers Ludovica+Roberto Palomba carve a serene retreat out of a 17th-century oil mill in Salento, filling it with custom creations and their greatest hits. The indoor-outdoor Grand Plié sofa and Piaffé table, which the couple designed for Driade, perfectly suit the whitewashed courtyard, with curving silhouettes that echo the surrounding stonework. Serafini and Palomba purchased the metal lanterns at a local market.

Meissl and Delugan’s favorite part of the house is definitely the “relaxation zone,” which features a black leather platform of their own design that appears to float between layers of tempered glass. The pillows are by Herman Miller.

In Vienna, a dazzling penthouse by Delugan Meissl has boldly inserted itself between traditional rooftops of the city’s Wieden district like a recently landed alien intruder. Meissl and Delugan’s favorite part of the house is definitely the “relaxation zone,” which features a black leather platform of their own design that appears to float between layers of tempered glass. The pillows are by Herman Miller.

What happens when the guest house becomes home? Retired couple Suzanne and Brooks Kelley found out when a pair of brainy New Haven architects breathed new architectural life into the property they’ve inhabited for over thirty years.

The Kelleys furnished the cottage with help from Suzanne’s daughter Betsy Burbank of Betsy Burbank Interiors. Classic modernist icons, such as a Saarinen Womb chair for Knoll, a Herman Miller Eames lounge chair, and an Eileen Grey E1027 side table look at home alongside present-day pieces such as an Encore sofa (which handily folds down into a sleeping surface) from Room & Board and a Doka rug designed and produced by Stephanie Odegard. The Wohlert pendant lights from Louis Poulsen were designed by Vilhelm Wohlert in 1959, but grouped as such, they appear distinctly contemporary.

Modern bayfront house in Chile

Mathias Klotz’s first project, a deceptively simple bayfront house in Chile was commissioned by his mom on a shoestring budget. The northern facade, which faces the water, takes in the view via double-height windows in the main living room, plus terraces punched into the second floor. The low-slung sofa complements the light woods in the house.
