Every Monday, @dwell and @designmilk invite experts and fans to weigh in on trending topics in design. Educator Karen Hofmann, designer and architect Jenny Wu, Angela Yeh of design recruitment firm Yeh IDeology, and the design studio padlab joined #ModernMonday this week to discuss the challenges young designers face today. Check out a few of our favorite responses, and use the hashtag #ModernMonday to join the conversation next week at 1pm EST / 10am PST.

What is the role of education in a designer's career? How important is formal education versus real world experience?

@LACE_JennyWu: Design education is incredibly important. It broadens your mind about the field of design. past and present.

@KHofmannACCD: Role of education: to gain specific design skills/process/knowledge and expand your horizons.

@AngelaYeh: Formal education is essential. Helps you develop a grounded thorough process and find & determine your style.

@LetUsSuppose: Formal education goes hand-in-hand with real world experience. Both are vital, distinct, and irreplacable.

What are the best resources where young designers can go to seek help, advice or coaching in their early career?

@KHofmannACCD: Don’t be afraid to reach out to people that inspire you or those that have careers you aspire to have.

@LACE_JennyWu: The best practice would be to find a mentor, whether is a former instructor or design professional.

When sharing work online, how can designers best protect their ideas and designs so their work won't be stolen / copied?

@AngelaYeh: Have snippets of work on the site and then share details to select few. Have a password protected website.

@KHofmannACCD: It's easy to be seduced by Kickstarter culture, launching too early. Get schooled on the business side before launching.

It's easy to turn to others for inspiration but this can lead to a lack of new ideas. How do we encourage original thinking?

@LetUsSuppose: Design never occurs in an echo-chamber - there is always outside influence(s). It's vital to credit where credit is due!

@_padlab: Asking original questions is a great start. Also looking to culture and nature for inspiration rather than other designers.

@MaskofSilence: Productive Procrastination: Go on walks to allow free thinking / brainstorming outside of the niche you're working with

How important is it for a designer to have a strong digital presence in order to make it in the design industry today?

@YehID: A digital presence is ESSENTIAL in all scales and forms website, pdf, resume, facebook, tweet, blog

@OlyTsav: Depends on how you network. Often the digital presence is larger but not as meaningful. Promotion is about conversion

@Lace_JennyWu: My favorite is still Instagram. As a designer, it is the best visual means to share your work.

What are the pros and cons of going in-house at a design firm versus going out on your own?

@YehID: Going in-house at design firm/corporation you learn how the experts have mastered the same challenges you’ll come across.

@wheresdani: Building a network of mentors and clients is so important so you're not starting from scratch when you go out on your own.
