In December 2014, the Los Angeles Conservancy nominated the 1950s coffee shop Norms, on La Cienega Boulevard, as a Historic-Cultural Monument (HCM). One month later, Norms’ new owner filed for and received a building-demolition permit from the city of L.A., and a preservation battle was underway. While the City Council decides on the fate of the iconic Googie-style structure, the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission has unanimously voted in consideration of the nomination, which will temporarily protect Norms from demolition.
Today, we kicked off this year’s annual Dwell on Design at the LA Convention Center, which will continue through Sunday, June 26th. Though we’ve been hosting this extensive event for years, this time around is particularly special.
