In the middle of the cold and dark winter, the Swedes hold their annual Stockholm Design Week, drawing exhibitors and visitors from Europe and other parts of the world. We met with a mix of established producers and new talents on the opening day, when design studios all over Stockholm welcomed international media to see their brand new pieces. While the much-debated topic among the country’s design crowd is the slightly existential question “What is Swedish design?”, one thing is certain: It is definitely alive.

Using geometric shapes, designers Sara and Anna Larsson at young furniture brand A2 (established 2008) gives the Sneak Peek cabinet a playful twist. The pattern of irregular holes makes it possible to display favorite items and hide the rest. The cabinet is handcrafted in Sweden, and is available with base or frame.

Producer Klong has a long tradition of collaborating closely with the designers they approach. For this year’s collection, duo Broberg & Ridderstråle created the table lamp Bumble in three sizes. A LED light source is hidden underneath the metal shade atop of the colored glass base.

The experimental F-A-B series from Färg & Blanche looks at the modest wooden chair as a nude body that can be given a new personality when dressed up in couture creations. The Swedish-French duo Fredrik Färg and Emma Marga Blanche combines industrial production with handmade textile or leather garments to stunning effect.

Stockholm-based Note Design Studio works within interior design, architecture, and graphic design as well as product design. For producer Nola, the studio has made the Hook cycle stand. A broad metal band forms the structure and makes it stand out, while the narrow width makes it seem smaller at a closer distance. The stand is available in pastel blue as well as orange and light grey.

The Area modular system was originally launched by Lammhults a few years back. It has now been updated by award-winning designer Anya Sebton with a high back version that makes it possible to make a smaller space within a room – for solitude or meetings. The modules can be linked using built-in magnets, and the high back cancels out much of the surrounding noise.

Architect and designer Jonas Wagell has drawn inspiration from bank safe deposit boxes for his key cabinet Vault for Designtorget. The frame is in color-coated steel, while the brass handle is shaped like a old-fashioned key.

A dark brown leather edge runs around the Rink table by Eva Schildt for manufacturer Klong. The designer combines a metal frame, colored the same brown hue as the leather, with white stained ash tabletop and brass detailing.

Leisure furniture producer Skargaarden has collaborated with Swedish lighting designers Mårten och Gustav Cyrén at company Atelje Lyktan to create the Tipi lamp for outdoor use. The tent-like shape is made in teak and stainless steel with an aluminum handle.

Architect Nils Strinning first made the String shelving system in 1949. The design classic has experienced renewed popularity in recent years. Additional furniture and new materials are being added to the series, such as the metallic copper version of the smaller String Pocket.

Valet stand Herrbetjent by Scherlin has a metal frame coated in pastel green, with details in leather and brass.
