When a couple was looking to update their 1960s house in Brentwood, California, they didn't have to look far for help. Their daughters, who make up the Los Angeles- and New York-based design collective Mass Studio, took to the task. Taking inspiration from L.A.'s midcentury modern masters, including A. Quincy Jones, daughters Safura, Sanam, and Laylee helped create a more efficient space that shows off a varied art collection and lets light stream in from as many angles as possible.

The righthand building, which houses two bedrooms, originally had three separate roof structures. "We demolished them and transformed them into one continuous gabled roofline," Safura Salek says. "This also allowed us to raise the height of the roof in order to have higher ceilings in the interior spaces." New bronze aluminum windows and a custom entry door also helped spruce up the facade.

Inside, a Herman Miller bench creates a small sitting area. A rich collection of artwork, amassed over the years by the Saleks' mother, Mahshad, is visible at every turn. The flooring throughout is a warm walnut.

In the living room, Mass Studio removed the drywall ceiling to expose the wood beams, and then lined the ceiling with pine slats. Built-in walnut shelves help emphasize the room's new, pitched profile. "We replaced the patio doors with floor-to-ceiling custom wood doors with dual-pane glass, which better reflects the overall height of the living room and provide more light and outdoor view," Salek says.

In the yard, Mass Studio refreshed the area around the pool, creating comfortable spaces for lounging. "We split the level of the backyard in order to create little pockets of program," Salek says. "We added an embedded firepit and lounge area, and also converted a planter into a daybed above the pool." The wood pergola and ipe furniture are custom.
