Ah, the holiday season—a time for warm spirits, an endless stream of guests, and to put your entertaining skills to the test. If you're hosting the big meal this year and have decided to upgrade from your ramshackle table and mismatched chairs, here are a handful of dining rooms for design inspiration. Will good furniture make the spread taste better? Debatable. But it might make guests more inclined to forgive your overcooked bird if that misfortune befalls you.
ontario vacation home with cloud white dining area with custom table and carl hansen & søn pendant lamp

At the rural Ontario vacation house belonging to a pair of writers, a pendant lamp by Hans Wegner for Carl Hansen & Søn hangs above a custom dining table by Cabinet. The paint is Cloud White by Benjamin Moore, and the painting, titled Meshed, is by Anna Yuschuk. (We're suckers for the paper-yarn chairs.) Keep the palette neutral with white dinnerware to complement the wood table.

open dining room with glass doors

The Beverly Hills home designed for a musician features a table is from Blake Avenue and walnut chairs from Room & Board. “You don’t want bright colors to take away from that relationship between the interior and the exterior,” Walker says of the restrained interior. The same could be said of your meal.

Vintage Scandinavian furniture Carl Jacobs Jason chairs

If you have the time to scour used furniture shops, you can furnish a dining room on a shoestring. A palette of wood, concrete, and painted brick forms a neutral backdrop for Kathryn Tyler’s vintage treasures, including a $30 dining table, $3 poster, and a set of 1950s Carl Jacobs Jason chairs she snagged on eBay for $400.

Dining room interior with modern scandinavian wood table

Peter and Lynda Benoit bought their Scandinavian modern table from Klassik Living in Berkeley. “Their prices are very reasonable for the uniqueness and quality offered,” says Peter. They chose teak since it darkens nicely and naturally when exposed to sunlight—helpful since their table gets blasted by morning rays. A persian rug softens the industrial loft space in Emeryville.

A quartet of red paints (Raspberry Truffle, Million Dollar Red, Vermillion, Arroyo Red), all by Benjamin Moore, make the built-in shelving in the dining area by Jessica Helgerson pop. The table is a custom design made of bookmatched walnut slabs joined by lacquered butterflies. The chairs are vintage Paul McCobb lacquered in turquoise (Benjamin Moore's Aruba Blue). The Ligne Roset Ruché sofa, designed by Inga Sempé, separates the living and dining spaces. The chandelier is by David Weeks Studio.
