From appropriated nooks to glass-encased rooms, each of these modern offices works a unique angle.

Finding inspiration in the work of Tadao Ando, a Houston couple designed this concrete house of their dreams. Located off of the kitchen, their office disappears behind sliding walls covered in black chalkboard paint from Behr.

An architect createed this long-term home for his parents around a glass enclosure built to celebrate the greenery of its Northwestern site. “There are a lot of well-loved, well-used pieces that were destined for this house,” resident Andrea Heid says of the couple’s furniture collection. They placed a solid alder Homestead table from Whittier Wood Furniture in the office, which also overlooks the pond.

Renovated home office

A dramatic curving garage addition added some serious volume to this ranch-style home in Southern California. Eliza, a writer, and Anthony, a music professor, both gained new office spaces. Eliza’s office is positioned against the addition's angled storefront window, with a custom, site-built writing desk.

The slant of the garage addition serves an aesthetic and functional purpose: in addition to being visually dramatic and eye-catching, the curve enables more interior volume without occupying a larger footprint. Adjustable shelving by ISS and colorful clip-on bookends from Vernon Library Supplies complete the space.

Los Angeles is not all mini-malls and highways. As Eric Garcetti, Los Angeles mayor and former resident of this home, shows, it is eminently possible to live green in the City of Angels. By putting solar power and recycled materials to use, he and his partner transformed a mid-century house on a cozy hillside plot into a sustainable home with garden terraces and panoramic views. A well-placed writing desk takes advantage of the home's striking view.

Toronto Contrast House Master Bedroom

In architecture, as in life, you can often kill two birds with one stone. DUBBELDAM architecture + design demonstrated that recently when tasked with remodeling a 1,850-square-foot Victorian house that was not only dark and cramped, but also a major energy drainer. How to make the house breathe easier and more sustainably? The firm overhauled the floor plan in a way that smartly opens up the space, introducing better lighting and passive ventilation without increasing square footage.

“I love the master bedroom, with the geometry of the white-painted, angled roof lines and the varying shadows that this creates,” the architect says. The naturally lit space features built-in shelves and a floating desk that overlooks the street below through a tiny window. An aluminum Eames task chair and a Serge Mouille wall light adorn the space.

When designing his father’s office (in his family's three-bedroom 2,700 square feet Venice, California home), Modal Design principal Daniel Monti made sure his dad had a serene space for getting work done while getting giving a front-row seat to all the action. The office offers generous views of the backyard and all the antics the Monti family are up to in the yard, pool or Jacuzzi.
