For those of us who can't do a full panorama, there's nothing better than a perfectly-framed vista.
Juvet hotel in Norway with views overlooking

Set in a beautiful stretch of fjord country about 250 miles northwest of Oslo, the Juvet Landscape Hotel is the kind of place you could not even dream up. The walls of the cabins are painted with black-pigmented oil to minimize reflections in the floor-to-ceiling windows—enhancing the sense of connection with the exterior scene.

Modern small space in New Zealand with ground floor and deck

Inspired by the small scale of Japanese residences—in particular, Makoto Masuzawa’s 1952 Minimum House—architect Andrew Simpson designed his own economical 538-square-foot home, set into a wooded site in Island Bay, a coastal suburb outside Wellington, New Zealand. The home also extends into outdoor panoramas, even—and especially—from the ground floor, where a westward-facing deck cantilevers out into the lush landscape.

Clement Meadmore Sling chair in house designed by Kirsten Thompson Architects.

In the Australian bush, a sculptor and an architect collaborated on this house built to withstand fire. A Clement Meadmore Sling chair provides a favorite vantage point for sipping coffee while looking out at Hanging Rock. “It’s always hard to leave and return to the city,” the artist says.

Oceanfront terrace in Rio de Janeiro

Parisian banker-turned-architect Jean-Luc Boucharenc is the creative force behind this striking five-bedroom house in Joá. Inspired by the dramatic natural landscape—the house is built into rocky cliffs above the ocean – Boucharenc opted for a minimalist design, employing glass, cement, and locally sourced wood to create the sensation of living outside.

The architect's penchant for natural Brazilian woods, particularly Peroba Mica, Ipe Tabacco, and Peroba de Campo, is on fine display here, from the wide-plank flooring of the master bedroom to a pair of oceanfront terraces. Inside, the space is furnished with signature pieces by the acclaimed designer Zanini de Zanine and vintage armchairs by the late, great Brazilian design legend Sérgio Rodrigues.
