Formal dining room with ClassiCon Venus chairs

Designer Barbara Hill applied her polished take on minimalism to a traditional 1920s abode in Atlanta for a transplanted Houston family. Konstantin Grcic’s Venus chairs for ClassiCon surround a table by Poliform in the formal dining room. Hill selected the Flos chandelier designed by Marcel Wanders for its “Old World reverence.” The sleek fireplace mantel was designed by Hill and cobbled together onsite from three solid slabs of limestone.

Chair One dining chairs by Konstantin Grcic for Magis

New Zealand architect Davor Popadich invoked nautical sheds in his unconventional design for his family’s home on Auckland’s North Shore. The couple’s four Chair One dining chairs by Konstantin Grcic for Magis are among their most prized possessions. They had been given their dining table as a wedding gift but couldn’t afford enough chairs to surround it, so they opted for a wooden bench on one side and the Grcic chairs on the other. Davor says he’s pleased they purchased the chairs early in the design process before the budget got really tight.

Kids' playroom in Fire Island

An intervention from a clever interior designer spared an old beach house on Fire Island, New York, from demolition. The boys’ playroom is outfitted with a Uten.Silo wall organizer by Dorothee Becker for Vitra and a pair of May Day lamps by Konstantin Grcic for Flos that dangle from a set of Peace hooks by Louise Hederström for Maze.

Modern kitchen with Rich Brilliant Willing overhead lighting

In the same home, Hill had the overhead lighting in the kitchen customized by Rich Brilliant Willing in a pert orange that accents the primarily black-and-white interior scheme. She added a stainless steel kitchen island by Bulthaup, its glossiness and “clean feel” tempered by the plastic stacking stools designed by Konstantin Grcic for Magis. The cabinets, appliances, countertops, and marble tile were kept as-is, with the addition of several coats of white paint in order to blend seamlessly with the walls.

Six stories high, crowned with a pool, and with a direct lineage back to the Bauhaus, a new town house in Tel Aviv manages to both embrace and provide refuge from the teeming Israeli city. The family of residents eats at Table B by Konstantin Grcic for BD Barcelona. The Plastic side chairs are by Charles and Ray Eames for Vitra.

Beanbag pouffes by Slacker Sack, Chair-One dining chairs by Konstantin Grcic for Magis.

With an angled roof designed to resemble the surrounding cliffs, this house in Maui, Hawaii, is built to meld with the landscape. The architecture firm Dekleva Gregorič Arhitekti, along with resident Robert Stroj, designed most of the furnishings in the house, including the speakers, wall cabinet, and dining table. The beanbag pouffes are by Slacker Sack and the Chair-One dining chairs are by Konstantin Grcic for Magis. The stucco used on the walls was custom made from a mixture of white concrete, coral sand, dune sand, and lime.

Modern bathroom hallway with hanging art

In an up-and-coming area of Copenhagen, a pair of designers and their twin girls inhabit a converted loft, filling it with serious design savvy and a hefty dose of creativity. One of the designer’s artwork hangs outside the family’s bathroom. It was inspired by the industrial output—Viking pencils—of the former factory space. Putting his engineering studies to work, he created the art via a meticulous process that included making precise holes and a template of “thousands” of pieces of paper. The stackable aluminum Chair_One is by Konstantin Grcic for Magis.

Compact stone house with rope loft and bedroom

The Karst region in Slovenia is known for its limestone plateau, filled with picturesque caves and sinkholes. Riffing on the local vernacular—lots of small, stone houses—the architects developed this modern interpretation for a family, complete with a bold, rope-lined sleeping loft. Steel rods surround the home's staircase. A MayDay lamp by Konstantin Grcic for Flos is affixed to the rope wall.
